Don't pick the scab...

May. 12th, 2006 | 11:40 pm

My German photographer friend Till is shooting some new photos for my tattoo portfolio. I just let him go crazy and he's doing some awesomely weird compositing. In the end there will be a whole theme of meaty goodness...

The legacy of brutality continues...

Apr. 23rd, 2006 | 06:39 pm

So I'm all proud because my 15 year old brother Collin (Epstein, not Wallin) just played his first live gig in a club! That's him with the eraserhead t-shirt, singing and playing guitar.Although I don't know how he can see with that Ramones mop in his eyes. The music is mostly adolescent angst & punk rock... like we all started out on. He's also doing really good at his Arts Magnet high school. Very cool. Now if only my other brother would get his act together...

What are people getting tattooed this week?

Mar. 22nd, 2006 | 10:24 am

This week I was asked to design and/or tattoo:

1.) Red wedding bands on a couple's hands. The bands would show through holes in their actual wedding rings. I usually don't do hands but this was a special favor for a friend. They will have to come back and have at least one other coat put in once healed;
2.) The words "Failed Rockstar" in dark red on the inner arm. Made to look like it was scribbled in ballpoint pen. The guy was doing it for his brother's b-day as it is the name of his brother's fanzine in Britain;
3.) An entire sleeve comprised of clichéd rockabilly images (dice, horshoes, flames, pin-up girls, et. al.). No symmetry, just jumbled in as they fit. This was purposely intended by the client to create a specific look he desired;
4.) A random outline of a five-pointed star on the inner arm near the elbow. I'm usually against these things because of how rampant they are in Williamsburg, but she was very nice and sweet... so I couldn't say no;
5.) 4 trees on the upper back, each representing the same tree in each of the seasons;
6.) Electrical wires and tubing coming out of a NY Jets logo; pumping energy and green fluid into the client's veins;
7.) The constellation Orion done as proportional diamonds across the girls' entire body (starting at back of neck and shoulders, all the way down to her ankles);
8.) A colorful peacock half sleeve with bright flowers and a stone mantra in Sanskrit;
9.) and a fake backpiece tattoo for a movie about a cannibal rapper.

It's getting busier as the weather slowly warms up. I hope it's a good summer.

I'm from Texas. Snow is still a novelty to me.

McCarren park from my bedroom window as it really started coming down last night.

This is a happily abandoned, lead-filled lot across the street from me. I don't mind the cancer if it means less people. The Eastern Orthodox church is beautiful (they've just re-coppered the domes which used to be oxidized green). Notice the crappy condos being built behind it, spoiling my view. 52 units soon to be filled with 52 rich assholes and their significant asshole others.

Fistful of Rock & Roll

Jan. 21st, 2006 | 09:50 pm

Supposedly I'm going to have a few pieces of my work in the giant upcoming Darkhorse book from Electric Frankenstein. Sounds like a cool deal. A lot of great artists too.

From guitarist Sal Canzonieri:

"I am doing a big 600+ page Rock & Roll art book for Dark Horse called A Fistful of Rock & Roll - Real Rock Art for Real Rock Bands. It features over 400 of the world's greatest rock artists. Almost anyone you can name featuring their posters, records covers, shirts designs, toys, etc."

Anyway, here is an additional piece I did especially for the book at Sal's request:

Shhhh... Secrets About Me

Jan. 12th, 2006 | 11:42 am

I've decided to condense myself into a list of entertaining "fun facts".
After reading these, you'll know me about as well as anybody.

I've tattooed thousands of people, including my mother.
On a dare I once laid inside a morgue refrigerator in an abandoned insane asylum.
I've touched a real, living hump-back whale.
I've had a junkie die in my arms.
I once had a conversation with Mary Tyler Moore about penises.
I've bribed a Mexican policeman.
I can read, write and speak Japanese at an intermediate level.
I've played bass guitar in several bands you've never heard of before.
I've been a pizza delivery boy, caricature artist, construction worker, Gov't supply clerk, 3D video game artist, production artist, tattoo artist, sandwich artist, graphic designer for Delia's, J.Crew, and Victoria's Secret, but mostly just a struggling artist.
I was an extra in a movie you've never heard of with Eric Stoltz and James Spader.
I did special FX makeup for a "Walker: Texas Ranger" episode.
I once slept in an archaeologist's shack in the Guatemalan jungle. A monkey tried to steal my food.
THC has no effect on me. I've only been drunk once in my life. I was 13.
My father was a promising artist and professor. He went insane and jumped out of a 6-story window.
I married my second highschool sweetheart after 10 years and got divorced 2 years later. We're still friends.
I once climbed on the Hollywood sign and thought I saw a ghost under the H.
I don't believe in ghosts, gods, fate, destiny, or luck. I'm fascinated by the supernatural and occult.
I once helped an unconcious, elderly salaryman on the stairs of a Tokyo subway while hundreds of people just stepped over him. He came to and was terrified by me, but appreciative.
I own a .357 Magnum. I've only shot at targets, not people.
Desperate after GWB got reelected, I interviewed for a job in Canada. I didn't get it.

Weird to see your life summed up in a bullet list. I've got a lot left to do...
